About Me

My photo
Hi! I'm Amy. I'm a S.A.H.M. of 2 boys, 3 dogs, and a multitude of froglets in my tiny garden pond. We are a homeschooling family (the boys - there's not much hope for those dogs and the frogs do quite well for themselves). I'll getting around to finding a purpose for my blog eventually. Right now it's just a random collection of thoughts and rants about parenting, mostly.

an unexpected dunking

Yet another mini-catastrophe at our house this morning...Rhyon fell into the dog pool while he and Colin were playing outside. The dog's pool is a small baby pool, so that wouldn't be such a big deal ordinarily...but fall decided to pay a visit this week (we'll see how long it stays) and it was about 60 degrees outside when he did this...needless to say, he was not a happy camper when he he came into the house dripping wet, saying, "Cold! Cold!" He warmed up nicely in the shower.

I've been baking some, lately. I've finally learned how to make decent biscuits, thanks to Alton Brown. We've decided to start making our own pizza again, since the local pizza place closed down in the last month or two...we still don't know why, but I'd hazard a guess that their expenses went up so much recently that they decided they couldn't turn a decent profit anymore. I'm still not so great at making pizza dough...it either doesn't stretch properly, or it's too floppy and you can't slide it off the peel onto the stone in the oven. I made a batch of muffins from scratch monday, which were edible, but a little dry. I'll have to tweak that one.

Today I'm baking bread, with the help of my Kitchen Aid mixer to do the kneading. The last two batches have turned out all right, but one was too crumbly (I think it over-rose AND over-baked) and the other was too dense, but not as dry as the first (underrose, I think...the recipe I'm using makes 2 loaves so I bake one and freeze the dough for the second to bake later, and I don't think I let the frozen dough rise completely before baking it).

So we'll see how today's turns out!

It's Monday All Day Today

But we're surviving so far. Even with homeschooling, it's hard to get up on Monday after the weekend and get back into the swing of things. It's been cool and rainy here for several days now and the kids are starting to get a little stir-crazy, especially Rhyon. Today I'm just trying to catch up on chores....you know, the ones I neglected all weekend.

Tonight is Chines Cashew Chicken from menus4moms.com. Colin is already not too sure about it, but I'm going to make it anyway and see how it goes.

too many blogs, not enough time

How sad is it that I have at least three different blogs to post to? One is a fandom journal on Livejournal that I used to post regularly to, but I'm not feeling the fandomness lately. I also posted personal stuff, but I'm thinking of switching to Blogger for that...after all, I've had this blog for years and have hardly used it. I've got one on Journalfen, but I haven't posted regularly to it at all, and I only set it up during a fit of pique with Livejournal. Then there's my fanfic journal on Livejournal, too, so that makes four... Does that make me a blog-ho?

I haven't had much time to post anything anywhere, lately. Colin and I took the month of June off from homeschool for summer break, then we started back in July. We have had a couple of breaks since then...one short one to go to Disney for a couple of days in July, then we went to Alligator Point in August. We took a Fall Break at the beginning of October because Jay had a few days off, too. And in the meantime, my mom had knee replacement surgery, so I've been visiting with her more often than usual.

Colin and I finally seem to be settling into a decent routine for school. I've selected a curriculum and implemented it, and he's doing pretty well with it. I'm not sure that it's not too dull...I need to see about getting out to do fun stuff more often. We went to Monkey-Joe's last week with our friends and had a great time --well, the kids did...I was afraid I was going to get stuck in one of the jump-castles, able to go neither forward nor backwards. Rhyon, of course, scrambled up the huge climbing wall like it was nothing, as did Colin. I had a few more problems with it, and the shorter hill we had climbed over to get there didn't have climbing steps going the other way. It was kind of embarassing, but I finally made it over and down the slide.

This week...we've all got the crud, but I think we're getting over it quickly, thank goodness.
