About Me

My photo
Hi! I'm Amy. I'm a S.A.H.M. of 2 boys, 3 dogs, and a multitude of froglets in my tiny garden pond. We are a homeschooling family (the boys - there's not much hope for those dogs and the frogs do quite well for themselves). I'll getting around to finding a purpose for my blog eventually. Right now it's just a random collection of thoughts and rants about parenting, mostly.

my kids are insane

So Colin is done with "computer school" this morning and wanted to know what he was supposed to do next. I answered "Spelling". His response was "then what?" So I said "cursive". He said "then what?" And I asked why he always had to know what was next. So then I told him after that he could stand on his head and count to 300.

He asked if he could do that first instead. I have a picture...I'll post it as soon as I can find my camera wire.

decision day...

So...wimp or shrimp?

Whoops...that's the wrong election. That was George the elder. vs. Dukakis, way back when. Guess I'm showing my age.

It's not even 10 a.m and I'm already seeing articles about voting shenanigans, namely this article: http://townhall.com/blog/g/cf47766b-5a6d-44ab-95e7-ce60631bcadc&comments=true#Comment13259d2a-5dca-435c-a272-a8e89043e895 .

More later, maybe.

fall back

Where did my extra hour go? I seem to have misplaced it...

I kind of dread tomorrow morning. Rhyon will probably be up around 6, since he usually gets up at seven. Re-training him will be loads of fun. He's full of new words these days...one of the cutest is "choo-choo meegee"...which is a choo-choo movie and can be any one of his several train videos. It's adorable. He's also at least learning some manners from his brother (though it's obvious when he says "yes ma'am" that he's imitating Colin when Colin is being less than sincere. But hey...at least he's saying it, along with "thanks" and "no thanks", both of which he uses frequently--we hear "no thanks" a LOT at bedtime! He uses please less frequently...still requires prompting a lot for that one.

Halloween was kind of a bust. Well, the kids had a good time, but I forgot the camera so I didn't get a pic of Colin in his Boba Fett costume. He went with his granddaddy and dad to the downtown Byron trick-or-treat, then returned to trick-or-treat around Mom's neighborhood for the last 30 minutes. Rhyon REFUSED to wear the James costume I had for him and didn't want to leave the house, so we stayed home with Mom instead. He at least had a ball answering the door with her to hand out candy! He was so excited everytime the bell rang.

Next weekend I think we are taking the boys to Rock Ranch for Scout Day...hopefully I'll remember the camera!

an unexpected dunking

Yet another mini-catastrophe at our house this morning...Rhyon fell into the dog pool while he and Colin were playing outside. The dog's pool is a small baby pool, so that wouldn't be such a big deal ordinarily...but fall decided to pay a visit this week (we'll see how long it stays) and it was about 60 degrees outside when he did this...needless to say, he was not a happy camper when he he came into the house dripping wet, saying, "Cold! Cold!" He warmed up nicely in the shower.

I've been baking some, lately. I've finally learned how to make decent biscuits, thanks to Alton Brown. We've decided to start making our own pizza again, since the local pizza place closed down in the last month or two...we still don't know why, but I'd hazard a guess that their expenses went up so much recently that they decided they couldn't turn a decent profit anymore. I'm still not so great at making pizza dough...it either doesn't stretch properly, or it's too floppy and you can't slide it off the peel onto the stone in the oven. I made a batch of muffins from scratch monday, which were edible, but a little dry. I'll have to tweak that one.

Today I'm baking bread, with the help of my Kitchen Aid mixer to do the kneading. The last two batches have turned out all right, but one was too crumbly (I think it over-rose AND over-baked) and the other was too dense, but not as dry as the first (underrose, I think...the recipe I'm using makes 2 loaves so I bake one and freeze the dough for the second to bake later, and I don't think I let the frozen dough rise completely before baking it).

So we'll see how today's turns out!

It's Monday All Day Today

But we're surviving so far. Even with homeschooling, it's hard to get up on Monday after the weekend and get back into the swing of things. It's been cool and rainy here for several days now and the kids are starting to get a little stir-crazy, especially Rhyon. Today I'm just trying to catch up on chores....you know, the ones I neglected all weekend.

Tonight is Chines Cashew Chicken from menus4moms.com. Colin is already not too sure about it, but I'm going to make it anyway and see how it goes.

too many blogs, not enough time

How sad is it that I have at least three different blogs to post to? One is a fandom journal on Livejournal that I used to post regularly to, but I'm not feeling the fandomness lately. I also posted personal stuff, but I'm thinking of switching to Blogger for that...after all, I've had this blog for years and have hardly used it. I've got one on Journalfen, but I haven't posted regularly to it at all, and I only set it up during a fit of pique with Livejournal. Then there's my fanfic journal on Livejournal, too, so that makes four... Does that make me a blog-ho?

I haven't had much time to post anything anywhere, lately. Colin and I took the month of June off from homeschool for summer break, then we started back in July. We have had a couple of breaks since then...one short one to go to Disney for a couple of days in July, then we went to Alligator Point in August. We took a Fall Break at the beginning of October because Jay had a few days off, too. And in the meantime, my mom had knee replacement surgery, so I've been visiting with her more often than usual.

Colin and I finally seem to be settling into a decent routine for school. I've selected a curriculum and implemented it, and he's doing pretty well with it. I'm not sure that it's not too dull...I need to see about getting out to do fun stuff more often. We went to Monkey-Joe's last week with our friends and had a great time --well, the kids did...I was afraid I was going to get stuck in one of the jump-castles, able to go neither forward nor backwards. Rhyon, of course, scrambled up the huge climbing wall like it was nothing, as did Colin. I had a few more problems with it, and the shorter hill we had climbed over to get there didn't have climbing steps going the other way. It was kind of embarassing, but I finally made it over and down the slide.

This week...we've all got the crud, but I think we're getting over it quickly, thank goodness.

what is it with my kids???

So this afternoon my oldest comes up to me with his new issue of the Lego magazine and points to a page. I ask what it is he wants to show me, and he says, "Look, a coupon."

It's for Legoland. In California.

I said, "We're not going to California."

His response..."But MooOOooom, we've never been to California!"

So I googled the driving directions to the location and proceeded to explain to him just how far away this place was from Georgia and just how much gas costs these days and how long it would take to drive there (because DH is out of frequent flier miles for now and once he's built them back up we're going back to Hawaii, not Legoland).

An hour later he's taking a survey on what mode of transportation I would prefer in th future: starships or transporters. He seems to be under the impression that transporters would be free.

Meanwhile, the little one fell asleep in the living room before he even had lunch today. I don't think he's feeling well.

mini catastrophes at our house

Yesterday was not such a great day. It was good in that DH and DS#1 got home from their third overnight camping trip with the cub scouts. No one got lost, and as far as we know, no one got poison ivy, even though the campground is fairly well overgrown with the stuff (and I won't be going back ther because I'm terribly allergic to it).

Unfortunately, at some point yesterday morning (probably before I managed to rouse myself out of the bed) our youngest realized he could open the bathroom door all by himself and got into his brother's Sea Monkey tank. He either dropped it or set it on the floor. It landed right side up, but about half of the water was splashed out of it, and there were dead Sea Monkeys on the counter top and in the tank. There were a few still swimming around in the tank so we filled it back up and fed them. There are about five or six now, down from twelve or more. Needless to say...Colin was Not Happy. Hopefully there are eggs in there that will hatch soon.

The other catastrophe was that while DH was keeping an eye on DS#2 outside, DS#2 (Rhyon) sat down in an ant bed. He has ant bites everywhere. He also was Not Happy (can't blame him).

Today we're back in our routine. Colin has decided to like homeschooling again this week. I think he is even moodier than I am (and I have girl hormones I can blame).

This is a test. This is only a test. Please do not panic.

I am posting with the Blog It app on Facebook. If this works...I may just have to get over my pique with LJ because Blog It won't work with Journalfen. :(

Oi! See you! Come play with me on Facebook!

(if only there were some type of fanfiction app on Facebook, it would be perfect, and I would never have to go anywhere else)
